Zoove today announced that it’s raised a new $5M round of funding for its “StarStar Codes,” an alternative to SMS calls-to-action.

The new round of funding came from Rogers Ventures and will be used to strengthen its US operations, according to the company.  The startup is the exclusive provider of StarStar codes (e.g. **NFL) for the four largest mobile operators in the United States, reaching over 250 million consumers.  StarStar codes were designed to let consumers directly engage with a brand’s advertising in the same way you would with a text-in campaign, without the fees associated with SMS.

For example, a brand could promote the call-to-action “dial **FLOWERS to learn more,” rather than the traditional “text ‘FLOWERS’ to 99158 to learn more.”  Most recently, StarStar codes have been used in promotions from the NFL (**NFL), X-Factor (**XF) and EA’s new Madden game (**MADDEN).  After the consumer places the call, they typically receive a text message or voicemail prompting them to opt-in to engage further by viewing websites, downloading apps, downlading coupons, etc.  The participating brands pay Zoove an annual fee for their number which varies based on length and scarcity of the number.

Combined with this $5M round, Zoove has raised a total of $20M to date.
