The biggest question of the year for Twitter is the same question that hounded the microblogging site last year: how can Twitter generate revenue?
Now, we may have finally gotten an answer- wait until next year.
If all goes as planned, 2010 will be the year of revenue for Twitter. Although few details have been given, a host of ideas have been bandied about, including a possible initial public offering.
According to Twitter co-founder Biz Stone, “2010 is really going to be the revenue year. I don’t know if we’re going to be profitable, but we have plenty of time.”
Even in the absence of an established revenue model, Twitter has had no problem raising capital. Now worth approximately $1 billion, Twitter most recently raked in another $100 million in funding this fall. Indeed, the investors have lined up and they’re ready to be wowed with Twitter’s revenue model, which, in some fashion will likely depend on an advertising component.
For now, Biz Stone isn’t talking. His only assurance? “Everyone’s going to love it… It’s going to be amazing.”
