WhatsApp CEO: We’re Now ‘Bigger Than Twitter’

It’s official. WhatsApp is now the single-most-used independent smartphone app in almost every country around the globe.

Today at D: Dive Into Mobile, WhatsApp CEO Jan Koum revealed on stage that his service is now bigger than Twitter, which boasts of some 200 million monthly active users.

WhatsApp, however, processes eight billion inbound messages daily and another 12 billion outbound, AllThingsD confirms.

The app’s success is particularly notable when you consider that it shuns advertising in favor of a 99-cents-per-year subscription fee.

Koum believes that excellent platforms in today’s rapidly expanding smartphone market will be easier to monetize without advertising.

“We do have a manifesto opposing advertising,” Koum said. “We’re proud of that. Who likes advertising? We’re so bombarded with ads so much in our daily lives and we felt that smartphones aren’t the place for that. Our phones are so intimately connected to us, to our lives. Putting advertising on a device like that is a bad idea. You don’t want to be interrupted by ads when you’re chatting with your loved ones.”
