Rumors of a Verizon iPhone have existed since AT&T was announced as the exclusive carrier of the Apple smartphone better than three years ago.

But this week, the rumor mill slowed and the fact checking began via an intriguing report from Bloomberg News that cited two sources (supposedly) within Apple claiming that the iPhone will soon be available through Verizon.

If sources are to be believed, Verizon – the largest U.S. mobile-phone company – will roll out coverage for the iPhone next January at the Consumer Electronics Show.

Bloomberg indicated in its reports this week that Verizon Wireless is still working tirelessly on a high-speed fourth-generation network to accommodate the iPhone 4 and present a caliber of service not presently available through AT&T.

Apple is going to dramatically increase the number of devices it sells in the U.S. when exclusivity at AT&T ends.

After the Verizon iPhone rumor was given a credible lift from Bloomberg, Yair Reiner of Oppenheimer said that Apple could sell upwards of an additional 12 million iPhones per year if AT&T’s exclusive agreement lapses and Verizon hops on the iPhone bandwagon.

Understandably, mobile marketers and digital advertisers of all shapes and sizes are salivating at the obvious exposure potential through the iAd platform if only a fraction of Verizon’s 83 million subscribers finally have an opportunity to give the Apple smartphone a look.

alright… I’m sold. Each of my family members will get one of these ipones. Love the iphone…hate that other carrier… so getting it on the Big V is a no brainer.

The bigger question is, does Verizon NEED to carry the iPhone? Three reasons why I'd say no: Motorola Droid, HTC Incredible, upcoming Droid X. Verizon also carried the Palm Pre and Pixi (which, Palm's monetary woes aside, were easy-to-use smartphones for the masses) and the cute-but-ultimately-useless Kin, for which I give it props for taking a chance. The only reason for Verizon to get an iPhone is to steal customers from AT&T, not necessarily to appease its own customers. Ultimately I believe Apple prefers to be the big fish in AT&T's pond, to being just another horse in Verizon's stable.

I think everyone keeps talking about a Verizon iPhone because they want the iPhone 4 on Verizon. Maybe they believe that constantly creating rumors (yes thats what they are) that it may become a reality.

If you want IRREFUTABLE PROOF that the iPhone will NOT be coming to Verizon anytime soon check out the article called "Why Verizon wont see the iPhone anytime soon" at http://getyourgadgetsgoing.com/

Saw the interview on Bloomberg which the latest “report” (rumor) was based on. An INVESTOR speculated that Verizon will LIKELY carry an iphone early 2011. Bloomberg blew his speculation out of proportion and caused a new rumor overnight (once AGAIN). Leave it to Bloomberg to take a comment and make news sensation. I’d actually like to believe the rumor (since I AM a VERIZON subscriber), however the investor had no affiliation with EITHER phone company OR Apple. His word is not substantial enough for me.
