Twitter has breached the 100 million active user milestone.
Announced today on the official Twitter blog, “100 million active users around the globe turn to Twitter to share their thoughts and find out what’s happening in the world right now.”
Twitter.com now sees about 400 million unique visitors every month, a 60 percent leap from 200 million at the start of the year.
At present, Twitter sees 230 million tweets on an average day. That’s better than a 100% increase since the beginning of 2011.
Twitter usage in the United States is growing at rate comparable to the rest of the world’s adoption and use of Twitter. As a result, Twitter expects to add another 26 million active users to its base by the start of 2012.
Perhaps most interesting is the revelation that over half (55%) of active users are accessing Twitter from their mobile devices. The end-goal for Twitter is to find a home on more than 2 billion mobile devices, although no time table has been set for the achievement of this very lofty ambition.
As far as going public is concerned, Twitter Chief Executive Dick Costolo revealed Thursday that it’s a distinct possibility if not probability.
“We want to be able to remain independent, grow the business the way we want to, and not be beholden to public markets until we feel like we want to be,” Costolo tells Reuters.
