Twitter has raised the curtain on its new advertising API.

On Wednesday, the microblogging empire proclaimed its new ads API to be the gateway enabling companies to more easily create ad campaigns on Twitter.

At the center of the effort is a commitment by Twitter to show users the most relevant promoted tweets.

“Our focus has been on delivering better ads for users, not more ads” Twitter announced today.

“Since we launched Promoted Tweets in April 2010, marketers have come to Twitter to reach new audiences and engage with more than 200 million active Twitter users on the web, on mobile devices, and on tablets,” says April Underwood, Product Manager for Revenue at Twitter says.

“We believe our system is working well because users like the ads experience on Twitter,” she added. “Our system rewards marketers for being good, not for being loud. And this approach encourages ads that are engaging, relevant and useful.”

Testing of the Twitter Ads API has been ongoing since January.

This is just the start of our efforts that will give advertisers more choice — and for our partners who are ad tool providers, the Ads API represents a new way for their expertise to meet the needs of their clients.
