When it comes to Apple’s iPhone, the “C” in NFC must stand for “can’t make up their minds.”
Despite months of consistent reports indicating that Apple’s next generation iPhone would deliver NFC capability, new leaked images of the device’s components indicate that the mobile payments technology may not yet be ready for its market debut through Apple.
“Given the primarily metal backside of the new iPhone, it’s highly unlikely that NFC is in the cards for this generation,” Brian Klug and Anand Lal Shimpi for AnandTech said recently. “In fact, given the very little space at top and bottom dedicated to those glass RF windows, you can almost entirely rule it out.”
On Thursday, the latest pictures obtained by Sonny Dickson show that there is no NFC chip inside the refreshed Apple smartphone.
“The forthcoming release of iOS 6 and its inclusion of Passbook, a new wallet-type application built into the mobile operating system, helped to fuel speculation that Apple would put an NFC chip in its next iPhone,” Apple Insider reported today. “Those rumors gained steam when a picture claiming to show the front assembly of Apple’s next iPhone was shown with a mysterious metal square that some speculated could be concealing an NFC chip.”
