Strategy Analytics Probes How Mobile Apps Become Popular

What does it take for a mobile application to become popular? According to a new report from Strategy Analytics, consumers discover most new apps through word of mouth.

“For app developers to successfully compete in the apps market, it is imperative that apps be of a certain standard and quality,” the research firm says, “with most consumers finding quality in applications that are stable, easy to use, useful and function as expected.”

Not surprisingly, the new Strategy Analytics’ Wireless Media Lab report shows that consumers find highest value in mobile apps that are “convenient and useful.”

And although we really didn’t need a study to tell us this, consumers apparently do not want applications that are “slow, cause glitches within their mobile device, or apps that run too many advertisements and send spam.”

“Consumers pay for less than 10% of the total number of applications they have downloaded, with over 80% of all applications downloaded being free,” says Taryn Tulay, an analyst in the Strategy Analytics Wireless Media Lab. “For apps to hold any monetary value to the consumer, apps must be unique, of good quality and used by the consumer on a daily basis – providing them with a service or feature that they cannot get anywhere else.”
