Once again proving that controversy creates cash, Sony has scored with the online release of its headline-making comedy, The Interview.
In less than a week, Sony has reached a new online sales record. The Interview has already generated more than $18 million to become Sony’s new all time best-selling online film.
Although the film’s weekend release on iTunes has helped propel sales even further, the biggest source of revenue at Sony has been Google.
Sources tell Re/Code that the “vast majority” of online sales can, for the time being, be attributed to Google’s YouTube and Play stores.
Additionally, Sony says “The Interview” raked in more than a cool million in ticket sales on Christmas Day, which is when the comedy debuted in a limited theatrical release.
