Skype may have dropped the ball.

Again.

Earlier this week, the popular social networking service temporarily went dark worldwide. From desktop to mobile applications, Skype simply stopped working.

Although systems are once again functioning normally, a flood of attention has overwhelmed Skype and perhaps resulted in a premature discovery of sorts.

It appears that a forthcoming update for Skype Mobile will introduce video calling capabilities for Skype Mobile on select mobile devices, the first batch of which will include the iPhone 4 and current-generation iPod touch.

Proof of the update comes from a help document housed on Skype’s official website. If Skype was endeavoring to keep the looming update a secret, they failed miserably, as the doc is candidly titled “How do I make video calls with Skype for iPhone?”

The document notes that additional data charges may apply and that users should “check with your operator for details.”

Although the iDevice product line may be first to see the major update in action, there’s talk of Android – and others – similarly gaining video chat capabilities through Skype in the very near future.

You can check out all the gory details at Skype’s mobile download page.
