Reflecting on the 2009 MWC

The Mobile World Congress has come to an end in Barcelona.

And today the GSM Association is reporting that more than 47,000 visitors from 189 countries attended the event.

What is interesting from an outside observer’s perspective is that, according to the GSMA, 50% of Mobile World Congress attendees hold C-level positions (that includes nearly 3,000 CEOs.)

As always, the rest of the crowd featured a healthy sprinkling of delegates, exhibitors, contractors and media.

Expanding from last year, the 2009 event was dominated by 1,300 exhibiting companies and occupied more than 57,000 sq m of space (which is 10% larger than last year). Further building on the progress from 2008, the MWC was in the spotlight to a new extent. Almost 2,400 international print, web and broadcast media flocked to Barcelona.

Until next year’s event, we will likely be talking about this one. But between now and then we will have an exciting opportunity to witness with great interest just how many products and services unveiled in Barcelona will fly or flop.
