Nielsen Data Shows Sustained Domination in Mobile

According to the latest data from Nielsen, while the smartphone community of mobile app users continues to grow rapidly, the more things change, the more they really stay the same.

Nielsen finds that today in the U.S., 71 percent of those with smartphones own either an Android device or an iPhone. Simply put, Google and Apple continue to clean up the smartphone space with very little outside hindrances.

RIM’s BlackBerry platform came in third with 17.8%, which was followed by Microsoft’s Windows Mobile Platform, HP’s Palm/webOS, Symbian, and then, lastly, Windows Phone.

“But when it comes to smartphone apps, iPhones and Android smartphones are even more dominant,” Wednesday’s report reads. As it turns out, 83 percent of app downloaders (those who downloaded an app in the past 30 days) use iPhone or Android smartphones.

Nielsen’s latest data indicates that 44 percent of all U.S. mobile subscribers now have smartphones.

“Among those who purchased a new mobile phone in the last three months, 56 percent chose smartphones,” Nielsen says. “Android remains the leading smartphone operating system while Apple is the leading smartphone manufacturer.”
