It was announced recently that several companies around the Los Angeles area have been nominated for the second annual Patrick Soon-Shiong Innovation Award, sponsored by the LA Business Journal.
Out of a pool of over 80 companies originally nominated, 15 have made it into the final round — including mobileStorm, MMW’s parent company. The award recognizes leaders in innovation in the LA region and spans industries including healthcare, mobile, 3D imaging and more.
For those unfamiliar with Dr. Patrick Soon-Shiong, he’s a surgeon and entrepreneur who has a long history within the healthcare industry. He was founder, chairman, and CEO of Abraxis BioScience, a biotechnology company developing cancer treatments, and was also co-developer of the metastatic breast cancer treatment drug Abraxane. Prior to this, Soon-Shiong founded American Pharmaceutical Partners (APP) in 1997, which he later sold. He’s currently the richest man in Los Angeles with a net worth of more than $7.5B.
Other companies nominated for the award include Hulu, FastSoft — a company that works to speed up Web and mobile content delivery — and JibJab Media, a company that’s gained praise for changing the way people send eCards. The winner of the award will be announced during a ceremony taking place on November 3rd.
