This week, Republican Presidential candidate Mitt Romney announced that he will announce his selection of a Vice Presidential candidate via mobile app.
For Romney, the move into mobile territory comes as smartphones, tablets, and social media are poised to play a huge role in presidential politics this fall.
“The first official way to learn the name of the Republican Vice Presidential candidate is by using our new ‘Mitt’s VP’ app,” Romney’s Digital Director Zac Moffatt said this week. “Users of the app will be the first to get the news on the biggest political decision of the year through an instantaneous alert on the one device most people carry around the clock–their phone.”
No word yet, however, as to when the announcement will come. Although with the Republican National Convention slated to begin August 27, it’s a safe bet that the announcement will come before then.
“Just download the app and when Mitt decides on his running mate, you’ll get an exclusive notification from the campaign letting you in on the exciting news before the press and just about everyone else (except maybe Ann),” the app description boasts.
So… do you think the Romney campaign will score points with voters in light of his savvy mobile app antics? Please weigh in with a thought or comment below.

Coincidentally, our company Adtheorent is partnering with Quinnipiac University to determine how consumers are using their mobile phones to gain information on the presidential election. It will be interesting to see if our results justify Mr. Romney's decision to make such an important announcement on a mobile app. The jury's out… – Mark Severini, CMO | AdTheorent
