Microsoft Entertaining Options to Buy Out Dell Shareholders

Microsoft has reportedly entered into talks with Dell about possibly financing its anticipated buyout.

As MMW reported last week, Dell is among the most iconic names in PCs to find itself struggling in response to the mobile revolution. As a result, speculation is rampant that Dell may take the company private.

In recent days, we’ve heard chatter that Dell is actively engaging with more than one private equity firm.

“The discussions are preliminary and could fall apart because firms may not be able to line up the needed financing or resolve how to exit the investment in the future,” sources close to the matter told Bloomberg on January 14th.

As of this morning, Microsoft is said to be the biggest potential player in the possible deal, which could be worth about $2 billion.

Why the sudden interest from Microsoft? Company chief Steve Ballmer recently stated that Microsoft could benefit from closer relationships with or acquisitions of companies that make personal computers capable of being powered by Microsoft software.

MMW will report additional details as they develop.
