On Friday, Mobile Payments Today reported that Merchant Customer Exchange (MCX) – the retailer-backed mobile wallet effort – has tapped digital security provider Gemalto to work with them in hopes of building its cloud-based mobile wallet.
Despite the hush-hush surroundings of the effort, MCX is quoted saying that Gemalto was selected “for its unmatched expertise in mobile financial services and track record of being trusted by leading banks, governments, merchants and mobile operators and their customers all over the world.”
The MCX wallet is reportedly on track to launch before year’s end.
MCX said it will also use Gemalto’s mobile wallet software to enable a rich smartphone application and software development kits that will let retailers embed the mobile wallet functionality into their own applications.
“Gemalto’s global experience and unparalleled expertise make it the ideal partner to develop a mobile wallet worthy of the stature of merchants backing MCX,” explains MCX executive Dodd Roberts. “Our work with them over the past months leaves little doubt that MCX will benefit from their considerable technical expertise.”
