Major Shake Up in The Tablet Wars

Major Shake Up in The Tablet WarsStrategy Analytics finds that a dramatic transition of power is taking place in the modern global tablet wars predominantly being waged by Apple and Samsung.

It’s a sad reality for Apple, but the truth points to an undeniable reality for its iPad. According to Strategy Analytics, iPad is losing ground quickly to Android.

In the second quarter of 2013, global tablet shipments reached 51.7 million units. Android’s market share? A remarkable 67 percent. The iOS-powered iPad tumbled to just 28 percent of global shipments.

Windows, however, also lost ground to Android as its global share dipped to 4.5 percent.
According to Peter King, Director of Tablets at Strategy Analytics, Android is growing quickly in the tablet market because of the pace at which hardware partners like Samsung, Amazon, and Google are pushing the OS deeper into consumers’ line of sight.

“Apple iOS shipments were 14.6 million iPads in Q2 2013 which declined 14 percent annually,” King reveals. “In the same quarter a year ago the first Retina display iPads were launched which could partly explain the decline as there were no new models in this quarter. However, to compensate that, iPad Mini which was not available a year ago, now freely available was expected to take the figure higher than 14.6 million.”
