As MMW reported this morning, a massive riot took place inside the Asian Foxconn facility where Apple’s new iPhone 5 is manufactured.
As many as 2,000 people are believed to have been involved in the riot, according to Reuters.
Chinese police in riot-gear were called into the facility to help put down the insurrection, which developed in the early morning hours of Monday’s work day.
For the time being, however, it isn’t clear what triggered the riot or if iPhone 5 production will be impacted. Of course, it is a safe bet that production will be hobbled to some degree as the plant was shut down for the remainder of Monday. Plans call for the facility to resume operations on Tuesday.
Some employees and people posting messages online accused factory guards of provoking the trouble by beating up workers at the factory, which employs about 79,000 people and is owned by the world’s largest contract maker of electronic goods.
“The fight is over now … we’re still investigating the cause of the fight and the number of people involved,” Foxconn spokesman Louis Woo told members of the media earlier this morning.
