Retail giant Target is getting more and more comfortable with the mobile channel as a means to entice current and prospective customers.

According to published reports this week, Target is in the early stages of beta testing a new “instant coupon” effort in select stores.

The “on-demand” mobile offers may become more widespread – if not universal across all Target stores – if the trial period yields promising results.

“On demand promotions such as instant mobile coupons run for a limited amount of time,” says Target spokesperson Molly Koesnt. “The programs themselves have run from 2 – 6 weeks,” she adds. “While the promotions have a short life-span, these types of promotions will continue throughout the future.”

Although the current instant coupon promotion ends next week, Koesnt says Target will “continue to enroll our guests in the mobile coupon program.”

Interested customers are invited to join the program via the mobile Web, online, or by texting the keyword COUPONS to Target’s short code 827438.

Target's been at the forefront of mobile retail. I went to a target a few months ago and the clerk couldn't find a toy for me in his system. I looked up the Target mobile site and was able to see that the store had the product in stock. It even told me what aisle the product was located in.

Target's desire to evolving to meet the needs of the consumer, staying ahead of competitors and embracing emerging technology is surely the recipe to sustainability in today's quickly evolving retail environment.

    Kudos to Target.

I definitely think Target is onto something here. They are keeping up with their modern image, moving into an area of marketing that is growing so fast. I've signed up with services like this before through a company called Text Ripple and I use the offers all the time. I've never been a coupon clipper but if Target was sending me coupons to my phone – which is with me 100% of the time – the combination of an all-in-one shopping trip and easy to use coupons would be genius, especially now that Target has grown its food department. It would definitely decrease my need to compare prices at other nearby retailers and grocers.

Frequently we will see high value coupons available at "Printapon" (printable coupons) when a new product is being introduced or when a product is going to undergo a radical change.

This is absolutely the way things are going — Mobile. I would love to get a Target Coupon just as I am walking in the door. They may encourage me to shop and to shop for a little more just because I feel like I experienced immediate savings. Good article.

The beauty about this is — it can be rolled out for the smaller businesses surrounding Target too. Smaller retail shops in towns and cities can use mobile in very specific ways to increase their business traffic.

I can't wait to hear the outcome of this campaign.
