Word came to light Monday that Instagram has updated both its privacy policy and terms of service to include one glaringly noticeable change. Instagram, which was acquired by Facebook earlier this year, will now share user content and user information across Facebook-owned entities.
“Our updated privacy policy helps Instagram function more easily as part of Facebook by being able to share info between the two groups,” the company announced this morning. “This means we can do things like fight spam more effectively, detect system and reliability problems more quickly and build better features for everyone by understanding how Instagram is used.”
In a blog post posted by Instagram today, the following reassurances were made to users who may be on-edge about the update:
- Nothing has changed about your photos’ ownership or who can see them.
- Our updated terms of service help protect you, and prevent spam and abuse as we grow.
The photo-sharing platform says that anyone with more questions should check out the revised policies directly.
“We know these documents are a little dry, but they’re very important,” the post reads. “Please take a moment to read through them so you keep feeling comfortable sharing your beautiful photos on Instagram.”
