Instagram Denies Scary Rumor About Subscriber Losses

Instagram has had a rough close to 2012. First, the photo sharing service was forced to backpedal on its revamped terms of service, and now the Facebook-owned group is being forced to admit that rumors of massive subscriber departures are untrue.

The New York Post was first to report that Instagram has hemorrhaged upwards of 25% of its total subscriber base since the terms of service debacle earlier this month.

As it turns out, it may have been The Post that got its numbers wrong.

The media outlet apparently used information from AppData that shows Instagram shed some 4 million daily active users in the last month. Embarrassingly for the Post, it looks like the publication misinterpreted the data and failed to account for all the metrics.

Instagram issued a public statement on Friday confirming that reports of a 25% decline are erroneous.

“This data is inaccurate. We continue to see strong and steady growth in both registered and active users of Instagram,” the statement read.
