What could possibly be sweeter than one million paying subscribers? Two million paying subscribers.
On Tuesday, Hulu confirmed that its subscriber base continues to balloon and now contains more than two million folks who can’t get enough of Hulu’s premium content.
CEO Jason Kilar dropped the subscriber stat this week at the Ad Age conference in New York.
Remarkably, Hulu had just one million subscribers last fall. Two double its Hulu Plus subscriber base in such a short period of time is truly an astonishing accomplishment for the company, which is clearly aiming to wrangle customers away from competing services like Netflix.
Perhaps what’s most interesting about this success story, MSNBC points out, is that people continue to flock to the service – and pay for it – even though commercials still come with the package.
“If you were to ask somebody if they wanted a lollipop for free or a lollipop for 50 cents, I’m pretty sure everybody in the room would say they prefer it for free,” Hulu’s Chief Executive Officer Jason Kilar was quoted saying. “I think there is always going to be a vocal minority that screams from the mountaintops, ‘I want everything free and I want no advertising’ … but you can’t argue with the results.”
If you’re a Hulu Plus subscriber, are you happy with your experience so far?
