HTC Grabs Stake in Virtual Reality Platform WEVRAccording to provided details from a forthcoming report from VRjournal, HTC Corporation isn’t just about smartphones anymore.

The company has a division devoted to virtual reality. Not long ago, it announced the coming HTC Vive VR headset. Now it has released news that it plans to build its VR ecosystem with the help of virtual reality platform WEVR.

“The Taiwanese manufacturer has spent nearly $10 million on a 15 percent stake in WEVR, which is an open VR platform and community based in Los Angeles,” Android Authority explained ahead of the weekend. “With HTC aiming to build the ecosystem and content for its Vive headset, the investment in WEVR is likely to play a crucial part in achieving this.”

True, Vive is a departure from HTC’s traditional product portfolio   — but perhaps a smart one. While the smartphone market is crowded, virtual reality offers much room for innovation and growth.

HTC Corporation, formerly known as High-Tech China, is a Taiwanese multinational manufacturer of smartphones and tablets headquartered in New Taipei City, Taiwan.
