Happy Birthday! iTunes Turns Twelve Today

It’s been quite a robust week for celebration at Apple. The latest milestone worth celebrating is the twelfth birthday of iTunes.

On Monday, Apple’s native Web browser for Mac OS X, Safari, turned ten years old. Now it’s iTunes’ turn. The staple piece of software by Apple officially celebrates its 12th birthday  on Wednesday.

Not withstanding those two milestone celebrations, it’s difficult to argue that either is bigger than the accomplishment Apple boasted about on Monday.

Last weekend, Apple surpassed the 40 billion iOS app download mark.

“It has been an incredible year for the iOS developer community,” boasts Eddy Cue, Apple’s senior vice president of Internet Software and Services. “Developers have made over seven billion dollars on the App Store, and we continue to invest in providing them with the best ecosystem so they can create the most innovative apps in the world.”

Cue says the App Store now has over 500 million active accounts. As a result, Apple’s developer community has now created over 775,000 apps for the iPhone, iPad and iPod touch.
