Although Groupon may not be the first name that comes to mind when thinking about weapons and where to get them, the deal-of-the-day giant is no stranger to gun-related deals. But in the wake of renewed gun control debate in the U.S. following a series of recent national tragedies, Groupon is holstering any such offers for the time being.
“All scheduled and current gun-related deals featured on Groupon North America, including shooting ranges, conceal-and-carry and clay shooting, have been placed on hiatus while we review internal standards that shape the deal inventory we feature,” Groupon says. “The category is under review following recent consumer and merchant feedback.”
In a story first reported late Friday by Fox7-TV in Austin,Texas, Groupon pulled the gun-related deals after President Barack Obama’s speech about gun control earlier in the week. An Austin gun shop owner had been running a Groupon for a discount on concealed-weapons classes.
According to published reports Monday, Groupon was already seeing a barrage of complaints in response to the gun-related deals, even before the recent high-profile tragedies that have left the nation in mourning and at war with regard to finding solutions to prevent similar tragedies in the future.
