The biggest rumor in mobile technology Tuesday is that Internet search giant Google is gobbling up a company called Viewdle.
If the process goes through, the Ukrainian maker of facial recognition technology will call Google it’s new home.
So what would Google want from Viewdle? For starters, the platform automatically tags photos, a feature that could be useful to Google in no shortage of social applications.
CNET reported this morning that the acquisition has been on Google’s radar for more than a year and is expected to close by week’s end.
The move makes sense for Google because Viewdle’s technology provides a way for users of Google+, Android, Picasa, and other services on a range of devices to easily (even, automatically) tag photos of friends. Viewdle’s SocialCamera app automatically tags Facebook friends and the company has released an Android game called Third Eye.
The purchase price is estimated to be in the high end of a $30 million to $45 million range.
