It’s a major milestone achievement for Google and it’s Android mobile operating system.
The latest data from App Annie shows that Google Play for Android has now surpassed its chief rival app repository – Apple’s App Store – in the number of apps downloaded.
Both app storefronts recently passed the 50 billion download threshold, although this latest revelation indicates for the first time that Google Play has pulled ahead in the shear number of apps downloaded.
But, as Apple will argue, what matters most is that the App Store still maintains a substantial edge when it comes to revenue generated for developers.
Application developers, for the time being, are still earning bigger paydays on iOS. Nonetheless, financial incentive to develop for Android is undoubtedly picking up. As of this writing, the Google Play store contains more than 1 million Android apps, while the App Store contains just over 900,000.
