Google Makes Move in Digital Publishing with eBook Technologies Acquisition

Looking to conquer territory in every direction on its horizon, Google has announced the acquisition of eBook Technologies, a successful company that focus on hardware and software distribution of both e-books and e-book readers.

The acquisition, which marks the first for Google in 2011, was confirmed by eBook Technologies on its website.

Working together with Google will further our commitment to providing a first-class reading experience on emerging tablets, e-readers and other portable devices.

Although most of the company’s website is no longer available for public viewing, a Google Cache version – how’s that for ironic? – indicates that eBook Technologies boasted several key product offerings. They included an online e-bookstore and corresponding e-book publishing tools, e-book hardware, firmware for e-book devices, and a digital bookshelf software interface.

Needless to say, the move by Google wasn’t altogether unexpected given the company’s recently expressed appetite for eBooks.

Just last month, Google introduced it’s very own web-based eBookstore, an endeavor that squarely places the online search giant in competition with other major players – like Amazon and Apple – in the realm of digital content publishing and distribution.
