Google Losing Latitude Next Month

Google Losing Latitude Next MonthJust days after the Internet search giant shuttered its popular Google Reader, another Google service is headed for the tech giant’s graveyard.

With the masses still in mourning over Google Reader’s long goodbye, users of Google Latitude must now prepare for a similar farewell (read the full announcement here).

Analogous to Apple’s “Find My Friends” application, one of Google Latitude’s primary features is the ability to see where your friends are on a map. The application simplified spotting your contacts when they are nearby.
When Google closes Latitude, users will no longer be able to use the application or third-party applications associated with Google Latitude.

Friend lists will also be deleted permanently.

Products being retired include Google Latitude in Google Maps for Android, Latitude for iPhone, the Latitude API, the public badge, the iGoogle Gadget, and the Latitude website at maps.google.com/latitude.

For now, the Google Latitude application is still available free of charge in Apple’s App Store, but Google plans to remove it when Latitude is officially retired on August 9th.
