Google in the Driver’s Seat for 2013

When we say that Google is driving technology to new heights this year… we actually mean driving.

Google’s popular mapping prowess is working its way into more and more connected vehicle platforms with each passing year. And the Internet search giant apparently isn’t looking to waste any time in 2013.

According to an announcement from Google this week, Hyundai and Kia will deploy Google’s Send-to-Car technology to send maps, directions and other pertinent traveling or destination information from smartphones to their vehicles’ on-board navigation systems.

In particular, Kia will use Google’s APIs to bring Maps and Google Places data to its UVO eServices connected car platform. Consumers will get their first look at this integration of technologies when the 2014 Kia Sorrento and 2014 Forte roll off the assembly lines.

Hyundai is purportedly planning a similar approach, although fewer details are known as of this writing.

Using Google Send-to-Car, local search and voice search, Hyundai and Kia owners in the United States can access a variety of maps features through Hyundai’s Blue Link technology and Kia’s second generation UVO eServices telematics system. Voice search enables drivers to easily find destinations, while Google Maps and Google Places APIs – used to power additional trip planning services – give drivers even more ways to find restaurants, stores and other points of interest while on-the-go.
