Google is shaking things up with its Android Market. In fact, Google has shaken the app marketplace so much that it’s name has apparently fallen off. Emerging from Google’s shakeup is a new name for the former Android Market.

“Entertainment is supposed to be fun,” Google says on its official blog today. “But in reality, getting everything to work can be the exact opposite—moving files between your computers, endless syncing across your devices, and wires…lots of wires. Today we’re eliminating all that hassle with Google Play, a digital entertainment destination where you can find, enjoy and share your favorite music, movies, books and apps on the web and on your Android phone or tablet.”

Google Play is entirely cloud-based, reveals Jamie Rosenberg, Director of Digital Content at Google. What does that mean? All your music, movies, books and apps are stored online, and available to you at any time without fear of losing your prized digital possessions.

“Starting today,” the search giant confirms, “Android Market, Google Music and the Google eBookstore will become part of Google Play. On your Android phone or tablet, we’ll be upgrading the Android Market app to the Google Play Store app over the coming days. Your videos, books and music apps (in countries where they are available) will also be upgraded to Google Play Movies, Google Play Books and Google Play Music apps. The music, movies, books and apps you’ve purchased will continue to be available to you through Google Play—simply log in with your Google account like always.”

Google felt that it could improve the way it presented its content stores with the redesign and rebranding, Yerga said. Web surfers weren’t always aware that Google offered an array of content through the “Android” storefront, which is understandable if they weren’t also Android users. And sometimes the experiences were jarring: for example, you would listen to your music library at Google Music but you would purchase music through the Android Market.

So long, Android Market: later on Tuesday Google is scheduled to begin rolling out a new version of its storefront for apps, music, movies, and books called Google Play. The hope is to remind Android users that it offers content while also trying to make it easier to buy content from Google over the Web.
