Google has gobbled up another company. On Friday, the Internet search giant was exposed as the buyer of Sparrow, the hugely popular and talented team behind Apple’s Mac and iPhone mail applications.
The Sparrow team – all five members – will join the Gmail team, CEO Dom Leca says.
“The Sparrow app is one of the most critically acclaimed iPhone apps out there,” says Matt Lynley of Business Insider. “It’s smart, move for Google to grab good design talent.
As Lynley admits, Google’s attempt at a Gmail app for iPhone was a “woeful dud.” Sparrow will likely play a critical role in turning that situation around.
“We’re excited to announce that Sparrow has been acquired by Google,” Leca said Friday. “We care a lot about how people communicate, and we did our best to provide you with the most intuitive and pleasurable mailing experience. Now we’re joining the Gmail team to accomplish a bigger vision — one that we think we can better achieve with Google.”
“While we’ll be working on new things at Google,” he adds, “we will continue to make Sparrow available and provide support for our users.”
