Girl Scouts of America Giving Mobile Payments a Try

The Girl Scouts of America may be associated with fresh cookies. But they are also going to be associated with fresh technologies in the mobile space.

This week it was announced that Girl Scout troops in 23 States are now accepting mobile payments.

The venerable organization has announced a partnership with with Sage North America, a mobile payments platform provider. As a result, nearly 40,000 Girl Scouts around the country can begin accepting mobile payments when selling cookies.

“We experienced some customer service issues with our previous provider,” says Marianne Love, programs director for the Girl Scouts of North East Ohio. “After addressing the issues with our chief financial officer, he suggested Sage Mobile Payments. Sage came in and, literally, within 2 weeks’ time, we were up and running with Sage Mobile Payments.”

With 70 percent of the proceeds from cookie sales going to fund Girl Scouts programming, cookie sales are perpetually of utmost importance. And the addition of mobile payments to the Girl Scouts’ arsenal is surely going to help generate new revenue now and well into the future.

“We want to give members real-world skills and applications they’ll carry with them as they become adults,” adds Carol Smith, a leader of Girl Scout Troop 24 in Solon, Ohio. “Using Sage Mobile Payments is a great way for our girls to use technology to sell additional boxes of cookies. This is an example of something we teach our girls; using technology is a way to empower themselves.”
