For the Mobile Web, Social Networking is Top Dog

If you’re looking for a mobile site to advertise on that will reach the most people, look at social networks. The same social networks that have killer traffic stats on the Internet are taking over the mobile web. A new report by Openwave highlights the trend (pdf here).

In North America, four of the ten top mobile destinations are social networks. Facebook, MySpace, ring-tone sharing site Myxer and dating site Plenty-of-Fish snagged spots in the top 10 with MySpace and Facebook coming in first and third.

For social networks seeing their massive growth slow on the Internet, mobile is the next place with plenty of room for a traffic spike. Last month, the Internet Advertising Bureau (IAB) that there has been a one-year increase of 179% in subscribers accessing social networking sites from their mobile devices while those same sites only saw a 10% increase on the PC versions of the sites.
