Flurry Reports Record Christmas Day Smartphone, Tablet Activations and App Downloads

It looks like Santa was hauling a hefty load of mobile devices on his sleigh this year.

According to a new report from Flurry, Christmas Day 2012 was a banner occasion for mobile device activations. In fact, it left the previous record in the dust.

Here’s what the data tells us so far. 17.4 million devices (tablets and smartphones) were activated on December 25. That’s a staggering 332% increase over activations logged between December 1 – 20th. More impressive, however, is that this is a 156% increase over the numbers observed on Christmas Day 2011.

“More iOS and Android devices are activated on Christmas Day than on any other day of the year,” Flurry says. “This year was no exception. On this Christmas Day 2012, more iPhones, iPads, Galaxy’s, Kindle Fires, and more, were activated than on any other day in history.”

Not surprisingly, app downloads also saw a huge spike over the Christmas holiday. In 2011, Christmas Day app download totals came in at 242 million. This year, the figure is 328 million app downloads.

“Over the next week, up through New Year’s Day,” Flurry projects, “app download rates will remain significantly elevated. Flurry anticipates downloads to surpass more than 1.5 billion, and have a shot at breaking through the 2-billion download barrier for the first time ever.”
