Flurry: 2012 Ended in App Download Frenzy

Following last week’s confirmation of the iOS and Android device activation frenzy that unfolded over the Christmas holiday, now we’re gaining additional insight into the astronomical number of mobile apps that were downloaded between Christmas Day and New Year’s Eve.

“The most important week of the year for app makers is the final week of the year, between Christmas and New Year’s Day,” Flurry said in a new report published Wednesday. “Starting with Christmas Day, the largest single device activation day of the year, the week between Christmas and New Year’s Day is marked by significantly elevated device activations and app downloads.”

Here are the juicy numbers you’ve been waiting for.

Over the holiday week, Flurry estimates that more than 50 million iOS and Android devices were activated, and – get ready for this – a staggering 1.76 billion applications were downloaded around the world.

The U.S., Flurry discovered, claimed the bulk of these app downloads with 604 million.

If you think these numbers are impressive, 2013 might just knock your socks off. Flurry expects the “trend of one-billion-download weeks” to become the norm, and that “the industry will surpass the two-billion download week during Q4.”
