Fandango – the digital movie ticket service – for mobile devices has enjoyed its best summer of box office success to date – and the summer is far from over.
According to an announcement from the company this week, 20% of its summer movie ticket sales have been generated by its mobile applications and its newly-redesigned mobile site.
This sets Fandango’s record for the most mobile movie tickets sold during a summer movie season.
Fandango sold more mobile tickets for “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 2” than it has for any other movie, the company says. Fandango reports that it sold 19% of the ‘Potter’ finale’s domestic opening weekend box office record of $169 million.
“With a sizable percentage of consumers owning a smartphone these days, mobile clearly plays a vital role in the success of movie ticketing,” said Jessica Yi, Chief Product Officer for Fandango. “Fandango’s record-setting mobile ticket sales for the summer season is a clear example of this industry trend. Our focus on mobile apps across a variety of platforms continues to pay off for movie fans on the go.”
Fandango now ranks among the top 5 m-commerce sites, based on unique visitors in the mobile shopping category, Nielsen data reveals.
To date, Fandango apps have been downloaded more than 18 million times.
