On Monday, the eagerly-anticipated and long-awaited untethered software “jailbreak” for Apple’s iOS 6 was released.
Trending worldwide on Twitter today, if you are unfamiliar with the term, was “Evasi0n” – the given name of the new jailbreak for Apple’s iOS 6 mobile operating system.
iOS jailbreaking, of course, refers to the process of removing the limitations on Apple devices running iOS through the use of software and hardware exploits. Jailbreaking gives users root access to the iOS operating system, allowing the download of a variety of things – apps, extensions, themes, etc. – that aren’t officially available from Apple.
For the first time since their release last year, Apple’s iPhone 5 and the iPad mini can be “jailbroken.”
The software hack making it all possible is now available to implement through OS X, Windows, and Linux. The hack in question is compatible with all iDevices running iOS 6.0 through iOS 6.1.
