Emarsys, the B2C Marketing Cloud, has just announced the results of their 2015 Advertising Week Survey on Americans’ perspectives on marketing and advertising campaigns from retailers and e-commerce companies. The survey was conducted online by Harris Poll from September 9-11, 2015 among 2,120 adults.
Key findings include:
- 81% of Americans want to receive advertisements from retailers and e-commerce companies
- 57% want to hear from them when there is a sale or promotion
- 47% said they want to hear from retailers and e-commerce companies when something they’ve been looking at becomes cheaper
Other top times Americans want to hear from retailers and e-commerce companies include:
- When something they’ve been looking at is close to selling out (26%)
- When a holiday is coming up (25%)
- After visiting a company’s website/social media page/store (23%)
- When they’re at home (17%)
- When they’re shopping in or close to their store (16%)
- When a loved one’s birthday is coming up (12%)
- After visiting a competitor’s store/website (10%)
- When at work (3%)
Emarsys’ research revealed that Americans are also quick to take action against brands that are spamming them. 81% of Americans said they would likely take steps to prevent unwanted email from retailers and e-commerce companies. 65% said they would unsubscribe immediately from all email communication from the company.
Other actions taken by consumers who receive unwanted email include:
- Roll their eyes (19%)
- Contact customer service (18%)
- Shop at a competitor instead (14%)
- Complain to their family and friends (13%)
- Blacklist the brand and never shop there again (11%)
- Rant on social media to their followers (6%)
- Post/Tweet directly to the retailer complaining (6%)
Channel of advertisement is also found to be important in persuading consumers to buy a company’s product:
- 48% TV advertisements
- 38% Print advertisements
- 35% email
- 22% social media
- 15% radio
- 12% mobile
- 9% internet banner ads
- 7% SMS/Text message
Emarsys’ Advertising Week survey even identified which presidential candidate Americans think is doing the best marketing job. The research revealed that Americans think that the presidential candidate conducting the best marketing campaign is as follows:
- Donald Trump (37%)
- Bernie Sanders (21%)
- Hillary Clinton (20%)
- Ben Carson (18%)
- Ted Cruz (11%)
- Carly Fiorina (10%)
- Jeb Bush (9%)
- Marco Rubio (5%)
- Chris Christie (5%)
