Wanting to dominate the mobile space every bit as comprehensively as it rules supreme over the online marketplace, eBay is delving deeper than ever into mobile territory.
This week, eBay announced the launch of two new – and free – iPhone applications that simplify the eBay user experience for those on the go. Hyping “The Selling App” as a power tool for sellers, the new app will enable sellers to list items for sale in under sixty seconds.
eBay spokesman Jim Larkin says: “We think this will be a huge boon for casual sellers to list their goods on iPhone in less than a minute.”
Conversely, the new “Classifieds App” is suited for both buyers and sellers, making it possible for users to quickly find or sell items locally. The goal? To get around the time and hassle of shipping items or committing to a purchase sight unseen.
With more than 8 million downloads logged for its original 2008 iPhone app, 1 item is now purchased every 2 seconds via eBay mobile. As a result, eBay reveals that its mobile gross merchandise value will likely reach $1.5 billion this year – twice its 2009 GMV.
It should also be noted that a third new app from eBay is planned in conjunction with the arrival of Apple’s iPad on April 3rd.
