eBay Mobile Sales Spike 300% in 2010

Perhaps Time magazine put it best: online shopping on your computer is so 2009.

As the overwhelming evidence suggests, consumers are going mobile with their shopping preferences and patterns to an unprecedented degree. One need not look further than eBay Mobile for validation of such claims.

eBay announced Thursday that the company’s worldwide mobile sales ballooned 300% last year, effectively tripling from $600 million in 2009 to $2 billion in 2010. Incredible but true, connected shoppers coughed up better than $2 billion last year via eBay’s mobile applications alone.

“It’s staggering to think that $2 billion worth of sales has been generated through a platform that didn’t exist a couple of years ago, and on a device that didn’t exist three years ago,” said VP of eBay Europe Clare Gilmartin.

Last week, Mobile Marketing Watch covered eBay’s holiday sales report, which showed global sales from Nov. 25 to Dec. 25, 2010 up 166% to $230 million over the same period last year.

With 2011 poised to be eBay’s most profitable yet to date, eBay Mobile continues to show the mobile world at large that smartphones are doing more to make antique relics out of our wallets than almost anyone may presently realize.
