Cox Communications Slaps Sprint with Lawsuit

Late Tuesday word broke that Cox Communications has filed suit against Sprint Nextel Corp.

According to Bloomberg, Cox is seeking a ruling that “it doesn’t infringe 12 Sprint telecommunications patents and that the patents aren’t valid.”

Cox, however, has also turned around to argue that Sprint Communications just happens to be infringing on two of its patents related to data management.

“There is a substantial controversy between the parties of sufficient immediacy and reality,” and “the Cox entities do not infringe any valid and enforceable claim of the Sprint patents,” Cox says in its filing.

“We aren’t commenting on this case,” a Sprint spokeswoman told Bloomberg.

These days, patent infringement cases are becoming every bit as common as smartphones. And as far as this latest skirmish is concerned, it isn’t yet clear who will come out on top.
