Apple is set to release the latest refresh of its hugely popular mobile operating system today.
iOS 5, which is poised to unleash a plethora of new features, is believed to be scheduled for a 1:00 p.m. Eastern (or 10:00 a.m. Pacific) launch.
The arrival of iOS today will light a fire under the Friday release of Apple’s iPhone 4S – the newest iPhone that shattered all previous record iPhone sales last Friday when the device first became available for preorder.
According to Apple, more than 1 million orders for the new iPhone 4S were placed within the first 24 hours of availability.
iOS 5 supports the same devices as iOS 4.3— the iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4, iPad, iPad 2, and the third- and fourth-generation iPod touch.
To upgrade your compatible device to iOS 5 (for free) later today, simply connect your iDevice to your computer with the USB cord and launch iTunes (it will probably launch automatically.)
On the left side of iTunes, locate your device name and click on it. In the center of the screen, you will then see which version of iOS you’re presently running. You’ll also see a button “Check for Update.” Click it. When iOS 5 becomes available, a dialog box will inform you that a new software version is available. Select “Download and Update,” and your iDevice will be on its way to reveling in the splendor of Apple’s most advanced mobile operating system to date.
