Brightkite Set To Launch Check. In Unified Check-In Web App

justinmontgomery2 mins

The much anticipated Check. In Web app from Brightkite is set to make its public launch tonight, finally coming out of closed Beta testing.

The app, which gained attention during this year’s SXSWi, aims to solve the problem of so-called “check-in fatigue,” or the growing problem of having too many geolocation services to check-in with every time the mood strikes.  The app started as an internal project at Brightkite and has been refined through several months of closed beta testing.

The app started out featuring check-in capability for Brightkite, Foursquare and Gowalla, and has now added functionality for Whrrl and TriOut as well.  The app is simple in nature, making use of the APIs available from all participating services to culminate in an HTML5-based Web app that makes it accessible on iPhones, Android devices and even iPads.

TechCrunch covered some interesting data collected during the beta period on how users are already interacting with app, which sheds light on the phenomenon of checking-in.  It was noted that users check-in most frequently on Fridays and least frequently on Sundays, with most users making use of two of the services offered in the app, with four or five being much less popular.  My guess is that Gowalla and Foursquare are generating the majority.
