It was the best selling weekend debut for any new iPhone.

According to the official word today from tech giant Apple, the company sold a record-braking 4 million units of the iPhone 4S in the device’s first three days of availability.

“iPhone 4S is off to a great start with more than four million sold in its first weekend—the most ever for a phone and more than double the iPhone 4 launch during its first three days,” says Philip Schiller, Apple’s senior vice president of Worldwide Product Marketing. “iPhone 4S is a hit with customers around the world, and together with iOS 5 and iCloud, is the best iPhone ever.”

Apple’s previous three-day sales record was 1.7 million units in the summer of 2010 when the iPhone 4 was released.

Apple also announced Monday that more than 25 million customers are now using iOS 5, the latest refreshed mobile operating system for the iPhone, iPad and iPod touch.

The iPhone 4S is available now in the U.S. (on AT&T, Verizon, and Sprint) and also in Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Japan and the U.K.

Nearly 100 more nations will get the iPhone 4S before the end of 2011.
