Apple has just recently updated its App Review Guidelines document with a noticeable emphasis on apps designed for children.
In particular, the revamped document now includes sections and regulations specifically targeting child safety. For example, a new rule related to the U.S. government’s expansion of the Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA) is stressed.
Per the federal statute, parents or guardians must consent to the information websites and apps can collect about children under the age of 13.
Apple’s regulations now bring the App Review Guidelines up to date.
17.4 Apps that collect, transmit, or have the capability to share personal information (e.g. name, address, email, location, photos, videos, drawings, persistent identifiers, the ability to chat, or other personal data) from a minor must comply with applicable children’s privacy statutes.
In effect, the biggest change is the prevention of developers from harvesting photos, video or audio of an underage user.
