Apple today announced that its refreshed operating system – iOS 5 – will arrive October 12th.
This morning at the auditorium of Apple’s Cupertino, California-campus, CEO Tim Cook kicked-off the long-awaited presentation and introduction of the new iPhone.
“This is my first product launch since being named CEO. I’m sure you didn’t know that,” Cook mused.
But prior to the introduction of new hardware, Apple took more than a few minutes to concentrate on its software – in particular, the company’s revamped mobile operating system – iOS 5.
Before this morning’s media event, all we knew was that iOS 5 was coming this fall. Now we have a release date: October 12th.
Taking the stage to review some of the hottest attributes of iOS 5 was Eddy Cue, Apple’s senior vice president of Internet Software and Services.
Although the tech blogosphere was at first buzzing about how much today’s event initially felt like a rerun from Apple’s WWDC earlier this summer, Cue confirmed some new details, specifically that iCloud will be free for iOS 5 and Lion users. 5GB of online data will be made available free of charge, with users having the option to purchase additional data storage.
iOS 5 will be a released as an update, compatible with the iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4, iPad, iPad 2 and the 3rd and 4th generation iPod touches.
Cue similarly confirmed that iTunes Match will be available before the end of October.
