Apple has reportedly suffered a serious attack from a group of Chinese hackers believed to be responsible for a similar attack recently targeted at social networking giant Facebook.
The incident is being called the “widest known cyber attacks against Apple-made computers to date.”
“Apple has identified malware which infected a limited number of Mac systems through a vulnerability in the Java plug-in for browsers,” the Cupertino, California-based tech giant revealed publicly Tuesday.
“The malware was employed in an attack against Apple and other companies, and was spread through a website for software developers,” the statement from Apple continues. “We identified a small number of systems within Apple that were infected and isolated them from our network. There is no evidence that any data left Apple. We are working closely with law enforcement to find the source of the malware.”
According to a source speaking in confidence with Reuters, “This is the first really big attack on Macs… Apple has more on its hands than the attack on itself.”
For the time being, Apple is said to be working on a software tool that will protect consumers from a comparable attack.
