Apple has been plucking talent from Nuance in recent months and we may now finally know why.
Having played a key role in the development of Siri, Nuance has no shortage of talent familiar with the inner workings of Apple’s popular voice assistant. Consequently, the company’s knowledgeable engineers are of great value to Apple’s long-term plans – plans that may not involve an acquisition of Nuance as previously rumored.
According to freshly published reports Tuesday, Apple wants to distance itself from Nuance’s technology and replace it with an improved system.
“Apple is not hiring only in the managerial level, but hiring also people on the team-leading level and the researcher level,” Abdel-rahman Mohamed, a postdoctoral researcher at the University of Toronto, tells Wired. “They’re building a very strong team for speech recognition research.”
Apple’s end-goal, we’re told, is to help Siri become much more than just a speech recognition platform.
