Apple Releases iOS 6.1: What To Expect

Monday brought with it the long-awaited release of iOS 6.1 to the public. Following one developer beta release after the next, the public version was said to have been finalized over the weekend ahead of today’s general public launch.

The update is showing up in the OTA updating service as of Monday morning. It also appear in iTunes if you look for updates.

What we can tell you at the moment is that iOS 6.1 contains bug fixes, LTE support for more carriers, security improvements, and a fix for the touch screen glitch on the iPhone 5 – a glitch causing the display not to register excessively fast swipes.

Also added to the mix is the ability to purchase movie tickets (via Siri) through Fandango, and updated iPod music controls on the lock screen.

“iOS 6 is the world’s most advanced mobile operating system, and with nearly 300 million iPhone, iPad and iPod touch devices on iOS 6 in just five months, it may be the most popular new version of an OS in history,” says Philip Schiller, Apple’s senior vice president of Worldwide Marketing. “iOS 6.1 brings LTE support to more markets around the world, so even more users can enjoy ultrafast Safari browsing, FaceTime video calls, iCloud services, and iTunes and App Store downloads.”
